What We Are

Mission
Novum’s mission is to train musicians in the performance of choral music of all periods and styles, offering audiences high quality concert experiences. We are a non-profit organization, comprised of highly skilled, auditioned singers from all walks of life.

Synopsis
Celebrate the best! People want to experience living reproductions of history’s most definitive music, the past treasures as well as today’s new gems. Excellent local singers are ready to commit to rigorous discipline. Fine professional instrumentalists combine forces with Novum Chamber Singers to perform the world’s most beloved, challenging music.

History
Novum Chamber Singers began in 1985. Today, this 24-voice chamber choir performs throughout the Portland metropolitan area, giving four concerts per year, with additional guest appearances.

Who We Are

Novum Chamber Singers: Since its inception in 1985, Novum Chamber Singers has enjoyed a unique identity with Portland area audiences as a small chamber ensemble that performs the finest in chamber choral literature of all periods and styles. Our repertoire ranges from 13th century motets to 20th and 21st century works by such composers as Britten, Duruflé, Foss, Ginastera, Rutter, and Eric Whitacre.

Members of the choir range from music instructors to bankers, physicians to engineers, teachers to law enforcement officers, salesmen to secretaries. Included in the choir are NATS and Metropolitan Opera competition winners, and soloists with such professional choirs as The Roger Wagner, William Hall, and Robert Shaw Chorales.

Director: Dr. Thomas A. Miller (a.k.a. Tom Miller, a.k.a. "Doc") is a vital force in the Northwest music scene. He's the Director of Choral Activities at Warner Pacific College and Director of Music at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lake Oswego. Dr. Miller studied at Anderson University, Wichita State University, Westminster Choir College, University of Southern California, and the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri, Kansas City, where he received the D.M.A. in Choral Studies and Church Music. He's done additional study in conducting and composition with Robert S. Hines, James Robertson, Gerald Kemner, Gregg Smith, Jon Washburn, Wilhelm Ehmann, and Robert Shaw. Affectionately known to many as "Doc," Thomas Miller is active as a guest conductor, published composer, and clinician. Other accolades include serving as President of ACDA Northwest Division, ACDA Oregon, and being listed in the International Who's Who in Music and Musicians. Tom Miller has been honored at Anderson University with the distinguished Outstanding Music Alumni award.
